Digitizing menu and order management for restaurants

SmartMenu AI is a QR-based digital ordering platform designed to streamline restaurant operations by digitizing menu management and the customer ordering process. Guests can simply scan a QR code to browse the menu, place orders, and make payments directly from their phones, creating a faster and more seamless dining experience.

In a Nutshell

SmartMenu is a QR-based digital ordering platform designed to simplify how restaurants manage menus, orders, and customer interactions. By allowing guests to scan a QR code at their table, browse the menu, place orders, and make payments directly from their phones, SmartMenu removes common service delays and creates a faster, more seamless dining experience.

The platform also provides restaurants with a centralized dashboard where they can manage menu items, track incoming orders in real time, generate table-specific QR codes, monitor business analytics, and run promotional campaigns directly within the digital menu. As the product evolved, additional operational features such as in-house delivery management were introduced, allowing restaurants to onboard riders, assign delivery orders, and track deliveries without relying solely on third-party platforms.

In this project, I designed the end-to-end product experience, including the customer ordering interface and the restaurant management dashboard. My work focused on creating a mobile-first ordering experience for diners while building intuitive operational tools that help restaurant staff run their businesses more efficiently. The goal was to reduce friction in the ordering process while giving restaurants better control over their operations, promotions, and customer engagement.

The Problem

Restaurants operate in a fast-paced environment where every minute counts.

But many restaurants still rely on traditional systems that create unnecessary friction:

  • Customers must wait to receive a menu

  • Orders are manually taken by staff

  • Menu updates require reprinting physical menus

  • Restaurants struggle to promote special offers

  • Delivery operations are often difficult to manage

These inefficiencies slow down service and can impact both customer satisfaction and restaurant revenue.

The opportunity was clear: design a system that removes friction from the ordering experience.

The Vision

I designed SmartMenu AI  to transform the restaurant experience by turning the customer’s smartphone into the primary ordering interface.

Instead of waiting for a waiter, customers can:

  1. Scan a QR code on their table

  2. Instantly access the restaurant’s digital menu

  3. Browse dishes and place orders

  4. Pay directly from their phone

But the business vision went beyond just digital menus.

The goal was to build a restaurant operating platform that helps restaurants manage their daily operations—from orders and menus to promotions and delivery—all in one place.

Understanding the Users

Before designing the product, it was important to understand the needs of both sides of the system:

Restaurant Owners

Restaurant operators needed tools that would help them run their businesses more efficiently.

Their biggest needs included:

  • Faster table turnover

  • Easy menu updates

  • Better visibility into sales

  • Simple operational tools

Customers

Restaurant guests wanted something much simpler:

  • No waiting

  • Quick ordering

  • Clear menu information

  • Easy payment

One key insight emerged from this research:

The ordering experience is one of the biggest friction points in the restaurant journey.

Improving that moment could significantly improve the entire dining experience.

Designing the Customer Experience

The customer experience was designed to be fast, simple, and mobile-first.

When customers arrive at a restaurant, they scan a QR code placed on their table.

From there, they can:

  • Browse the digital menu

  • View food images and descriptions

  • Select items and customize their order

  • Place their order instantly

  • Pay directly from their phone

This removes the need to wait for staff before placing an order and reduces ordering errors caused by manual processes.

The result is a smoother and faster dining experience.

Designing the Restaurant Dashboard

While customers interact with the menu, restaurants manage their operations through a centralized dashboard.

The dashboard was designed around the key workflows of restaurant staff.

Orders

Restaurants can view and manage incoming orders in real time, ensuring the kitchen and staff stay coordinated.

Menu Management

Restaurant owners can easily add new dishes, update prices, and organize menu categories without needing to reprint menus.

Table Management

Each table can have a unique QR code that links customers directly to the restaurant’s menu.

Analytics

Restaurants gain insights into their business performance, such as revenue trends and popular dishes.

The goal was to create a dashboard that was powerful enough for restaurant operations but simple enough to use during busy service hours.

Expanding the Platform

As the product evolved, new opportunities emerged to extend SmartMenu’s capabilities.

Promotional Ads

Restaurants often want to promote special offers, but traditional menus make this difficult.

To solve this, I designed an ads library where restaurants can create promotional banners that appear directly within the digital menu.

For example:

  • Weekend specials

  • Happy hour deals

  • New menu items

This allows restaurants to market directly within the ordering experience.

Delivery Management

Many restaurants also manage their own delivery operations.

To support this, SmartMenu includes delivery management features that allow restaurants to:

  • Configure delivery settings

  • Onboard riders

  • Assign delivery orders

  • Track deliveries in real time

This enables restaurants to run their own delivery operations without relying entirely on third-party platforms.

Let’s build the projects that future-proof your brand.
